Promptle: The Daily AI Art Puzzle

Promptle: The Daily AI Art Puzzle

Promptle is NightCafe's daily AI art puzzle — think of it as Wordle for image editing. Each day there's one puzzle: you're shown a Start image and a Target image, and your goal is to transform the start image into the target using AI edit prompts. You get 5 steps, and it's completely free to play — today's first attempt, extra tries, and past puzzles.

Promptle is in Alpha. We're still tweaking how it works, and we'll only keep developing it if the community really likes it — so give it a go and let us know what you think!

Where to find Promptle

  • On a phone, tap Play in the bottom bar, then Promptle. See Getting around NightCafe on mobile.
  • Go straight to www.promptle.game.
  • Open the Challenges page — today's Promptle appears there alongside the Daily Challenge.
  • Look for the Promptle card in the Studio.
  • New to Promptle? Open the help icon on the Promptle page and try the guided tutorial — a short practice puzzle that walks you through how it works.
  • Browse past puzzles in the Promptle archive — tap Browse archive on the results screen, or go to creator.nightcafe.studio/promptle/archive.

There's one puzzle per day (it rolls over at UTC midnight). Many days include more than one difficulty level (see below). The page shows a countdown to the next puzzle (for example, “Next Promptle in 5h 12m”). If you ever see “There's no Promptle puzzle today”, just check back tomorrow.

How to play

  1. Open today's puzzle. You'll see the Start image and the Target image you're trying to recreate.
  2. Step 1: describe an edit to apply to the start image — for example, “Turn the cat into a golden retriever”.
  3. Each following edit is applied to your latest image (not the original start image), so your changes build on each other.
  4. After each edit, your result is scored against the target from 0–100%, along with a breakdown of how you did.
  5. Reach 90% similarity within 5 steps to win. If you use all 5 steps without hitting 90%, your best score for the day still counts.

Keep each edit prompt short — there's a 100-character limit per prompt. Promptle's images are generated with a fast prompt-to-edit model (Flux 2 Klein 9B Fast) at 1024×1024px. It's not the most powerful image editor available, so simple, clear prompts work best. Don't spend characters on phrases like “leave everything else the same” — that is handled automatically.

Difficulty levels

Many days include more than one difficulty. You can switch between Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Expert on the Promptle page. Each level uses the same start image with a different target, and each has its own leaderboard.

Play one level at a time. Finish the attempt you're on before switching to another difficulty.

After you finish a level

The results screen can offer a next step:

  • You won — you may see Try Intermediate (or the next harder level). Same start image, tougher target.
  • You missed — you may see Try Beginner (or the next easier level you haven't already won). Same start image, easier target.
  • Retry this level — play the same difficulty again. See Replaying a level below.

Replaying a level

Your first play of the day on a difficulty counts on that level's ranked leaderboard.

After you've finished a level, you can still:

  • Replay the same difficulty
  • Try a different difficulty

Those extra plays are free and do not count on the ranked daily leaderboard — they're for practice.

While you're on an extra play, a short note appears under the prompt box: Replays are not eligible for leaderboards. Next to it you can tap Cancel replay (or Go back, if you started another difficulty and haven't submitted a prompt yet) to return to your ranked result without finishing the extra play.

You can replay today's puzzle only while it is still open. After it closes, you can't start another run of a puzzle you've already finished — but you can still play past puzzles you haven't finished yet (see Past puzzles below).

This is different from the replay video on the results screen (a stylised recap you can watch or share). That video is free and does not start a new play.

Past puzzles

The Promptle archive lists previous daily puzzles. Open it from the results screen (Browse archive), or go to creator.nightcafe.studio/promptle/archive.

Playing a past puzzle is free and unranked. You get one play per past puzzle. If you leave it unfinished, you can come back and finish it. Once you've finished a past puzzle, you can't replay it.

While you're playing a past puzzle, a short note appears under the prompt box: Past puzzle plays are not eligible for leaderboards.

If a past puzzle has already closed and you never started it (or never finished it), you can still open it. You'll see the start and target images, any attempts you already made (read-only — you can't submit more edits), that day's leaderboards, and a button to play today's Promptle. A note explains that the puzzle ended before you could play or finish it. Secrets (the keyword and secret detail) are shown only if they were unlocked for you.

How scoring works

Each turn, your edited image is compared to the target image and scored out of 100. Reach 90% to win. Your score is made up of six factors:

  • Content (35%) — do both images show the same subjects and objects?
  • Style (25%) — does the artistic style match (medium, realism, rendering technique)?
  • Placement (15%) — is the composition similar, with key elements in the same parts of the frame at a similar scale?
  • Color (15%) — are the palette and lighting similar?
  • Keyword (5%) — each puzzle has a required keyword; use it in at least one of your edit prompts. The score breakdown shows a tick once you've used it.
  • Secret detail (5%) — there's a hidden detail visible in the target image; include it in your result to earn these points.

The leaderboard

Every puzzle has a daily leaderboard (and a friends leaderboard if you follow other players). When a day has multiple difficulty levels, each level is ranked separately.

  • If you haven't reached 90% yet, you're ranked by your best match percentage.
  • Once you've won (90% or higher), solving in fewer steps boosts your score: your leaderboard score is your best match × 5 ÷ the number of steps you used. So winning in 2 steps beats winning in 5.
  • Only ranked plays appear on the leaderboard. Extra plays after you've already finished a level (a replay, or another difficulty after finishing one) are unranked practice. Plays of past (closed) puzzles are also unranked.

After the day's puzzle closes, you can also learn from other players' winning prompts — see Sharing your prompts below. Yesterday's puzzle card on the Promptle page points you to the leaderboards. If you finished yesterday's puzzle, the keyword and secret detail are revealed there. If you didn't finish it, those secrets stay hidden — you can still check the leaderboards for shared winning prompts.

Sharing your prompts

Sharing your Promptle prompts is optional and off by default. If you opt in, other players can see the edit prompts you used — but only after that day's puzzle closes. Your prompts stay hidden on today's live leaderboard.

This is separate from sharing a results card, and separate from publishing Studio creations. Promptle prompt sharing does not publish your Promptle images to Explore.

How to share (or keep private)

  • After a ranked win: a popup may ask whether you'd like to share your prompts after the puzzle closes. Choose Share after close or Keep private.
  • On the leaderboard: use the switch labelled “Allow other players to view my prompts after the puzzle closes”. You can change this for the current play, and optionally save the same choice as your default.
  • Account default: go to Account settings → publishing preferences and turn on “Share my Promptle prompts on leaderboards after each puzzle closes”. You can still override this for an individual play.

Viewing other players' prompts

Once a puzzle has closed:

  • Open that day's leaderboard and tap a player who shared their prompts to see their steps.
  • Use the eye icon on the leaderboard to show only players who shared their prompts.
  • On yesterday's Promptle card, you'll see a reminder to check the leaderboards for winning prompts.

Streaks and rewards

Finishing Promptle counts toward your daily activity on NightCafe — when you're done, you can claim your daily streak reward (if you haven't already claimed it that day). See Streaks & Badges for more.

Sharing your result

When you finish — win or lose — Promptle creates a shareable results card showing your score, the start and target images, your final image, and a row of color-coded squares for each step (green for a great match, down through yellow and orange to red). Tap Share or Download to post it and challenge your friends. Shared cards and replay videos point to www.promptle.game. This results card is not the same as sharing your actual prompts on the leaderboard, and not the same as starting a new play of the puzzle.

Didn't get there? You can try another difficulty or replay this one (see above), or share your result and come back tomorrow.

Tips for a better score

  • Compare the Start and Target carefully: which subjects change, and how do the style, composition, and colors differ?
  • Make one clear change per step rather than cramming everything into a single prompt.
  • Keep prompts short and literal — long, complex prompts often confuse the fast editing model.
  • Try to work a plausible style keyword into an edit, and look for a small secret detail in the target to reproduce for those bonus points.
  • If a level feels too hard or too easy, try another difficulty — same start image, different target.
  • After the puzzle closes, look at shared winning prompts on the leaderboard to see how other players approached the same target.
