What is GPT Image?

GPT Image is OpenAI’s image model family on NightCafe. Current generations are GPT Image 1.5, 2, and GPT Image 2.5 (Flare and Sunburst). GPT Image 1 is still in the picker but is retiring on October 23, 2026.

GPT Image 2.5 is the newest and the one to start with. It adds a Quality setting (Low through Max) and two variants: Flare (faster everyday use) and Sunburst (higher precision). See the dedicated guide: GPT Image 2.5 on NightCafe.

What it’s good at

  • Strong prompt fidelity and text rendering — especially GPT Image 2 and 2.5, which are also layout-aware.
  • Prompt-to-edit and multi-image fusion — supported on GPT Image 1.5, 2, and 2.5 (GPT Image 1 is best for straightforward text-to-image).
  • Consistent characters — on GPT Image 1.5, 2, and 2.5.

GPT Image 2.5 (newest)

  • Flare — faster generation and iteration. At the top of the Studio model picker.
  • Sunburst — tighter control for detailed work and edits.
  • Quality: Low (default), Medium, High, Extra High, Max.
  • Resolution: Medium Res (~1K) or High Res (~2K).
  • Low @ Medium Res is 1 credit; Low @ High Res is 2 credits. On AI Creator and above, those Low settings are unlimited.
  • Up to 16 start images. Each start image adds 1 credit.
  • One image per generate.

GPT Image 2 (previous generation)

Still excellent, and still available. The Low / Medium / High tiers are the same model at different quality settings.

  • Low (~1 credit, PRO) — strong everyday option; unlimited on AI Creator and above.
  • Medium (~5.5 credits, PRO)
  • High (~22 credits, PRO, Fast Credits)

GPT Image 1.5 and 1

  • GPT Image 1.5 (Low / Medium / High, ~1 / 3.5 / 10 credits, PRO) — the previous OpenAI generation. Still capable; 1.5 Low is unlimited on AI Artist and above.
  • GPT Image 1 (Low / Medium / High) — superseded by 1.5, 2, and 2.5. Retiring on October 23, 2026. See Deprecation of GPT Image 1. Switch to GPT Image 2.5 or GPT Image 2.

Start images and credits

  • GPT Image 1.5 supports up to 14 start images; GPT Image 2 and 2.5 support up to 16.
  • On GPT Image 2 and 2.5, each start image adds an extra 1 credit.
  • The highest quality settings typically require Fast Credits.
