How to Perform Your Host Duties in Chats

Here are some suggested guidelines on how best to approach your hosting duties within the different chat environments on NightCafe. Since chats are primarily self-moderated, hosts often collaborate with chat owners to ensure a positive atmosphere and adherence to rules.

For each chat – whether Verified or not – your role is to facilitate engaging discussions and maintain a welcoming environment.

Verified Chats

Verified chats are in a unique situation where the owner is NightCafe itself. It’s important to keep in mind that the Verified chats should be considered PG-13 rating and content needs to be acceptable for users 13+ years.

What is PG-13?

The PG-13 rating signifies content that may be suitable for teenagers aged 13 and older. It allows for a moderate level of mature content, such as language, violence, and thematic elements, while still maintaining a responsible level of appropriateness. While PG-13 content can address serious and mature topics, it avoids crossing into explicit or graphic territory.

Acceptable Content (PG-13):

  • Mild Profanity: Occasional use of mild profanity is acceptable, but excessive or offensive language should be reported.

  • Moderate Violence: Depictions of violence can be shown, but extreme or gratuitous violence is not suitable.

  • Suggestive Themes: Themes related to relationships and romance can be explored, but explicit sexual and erotic content is not allowed.

  • Mild Horror: Creations involving suspenseful or mildly frightening elements are okay, but explicit gore or intense horror is not permitted.

  • Limited Drug References: References to drugs or alcohol should be handled with sensitivity and not promote their use.

Unacceptable Content (Not PG-13):

  • Strong Profanity: The use of strong, offensive, or explicit language is not allowed.

  • Explicit Sexual Content: Graphic depictions of sexual acts or explicit nudity are strictly prohibited. This includes full frontal nudity, even if only implied.

  • Intense Gore: Extreme violence, gore, or detailed harm to humans or animals is not acceptable in Chats and goes against Community Standards.

  • Hate Speech: Content that promotes hate, discrimination, or harm towards any group or individual is prohibited.

  • Drug Promotion: Encouraging or glamorizing drug use is against our guidelines.

Remember, while PG-13 standards allow for a reasonable level of mature content, it's essential to prioritize the comfort and safety of all users. Always err on the side of caution when determining whether content is suitable.

If you ever have doubts about whether content aligns with PG-13 guidelines, don't hesitate to consult with fellow Chat Hosts or reach out to moderators for guidance. Your diligence in maintaining a respectful and appropriate environment is key to the NightCafe experience.

Enforcing Rules in Chats: When to Report and Remove Content

As a Chat Host, you play a pivotal role in upholding the NightCafe Community Standards and ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all users. Please refer to the NightCafe Community Standards as your guiding framework for acceptable behavior and content. While the boundaries of acceptability may sometimes be unclear, rely on your best judgment to make decisions.

Reporting and Removing Content

If you come across a user violating the Community Standards or sharing content that is erotic or excessively sexual, it's important to Report and Remove the content. This step helps maintain the integrity of the community. Remember, reporting is a crucial step as it aids in proper moderation.

Steps to take:

  1. Report the content first to ensure documentation.

  2. Remove the content only after reporting, allowing it to be captured in the user's report card if further action is needed.

Extreme Violations

For extreme violations of the NightCafe Community Standards, immediate action is necessary to maintain a safe and respectful environment. Here are some examples of content and behavior that fall under this category:

  • Explicit Pornographic Content: Sharing explicit sexual content, including explicit nudity, sexual acts, or graphic depictions of sexual situations, is strictly prohibited.

  • Hate Speech and Harassment: Engaging in hate speech, threats, or harassment targeting individuals or groups based on factors such as race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or sexual orientation is unacceptable.

  • Incitement to Harm: Encouraging self-harm, suicide, or harm to others in any form is a grave violation of our guidelines.

  • Malicious Content: Sharing content designed to harm, deceive, or spread viruses, malware, or scams is not allowed.

  • Extreme Violence and Gore: Depicting extreme violence, gore, or gratuitous harm to humans or animals is strictly prohibited.

  • Child Exploitation: Any content that exploits or harms minors in any way is a severe violation.

  • Nudity or Sexualization of Minors: Sharing any content that involves the nudity, sexualization, or exploitation of minors is strictly forbidden.

  • Unauthorized Sharing of Personal Information, or Doxing: Revealing or soliciting personal, private, or confidential information of users without consent is not allowed.

  • Impersonation and Fake Accounts: Creating accounts to impersonate others or spread false information is not allowed.

  • Aggressive Trolling and Deliberate Disruption: Consistently engaging in disruptive behavior, trolling, or deliberately derailing conversations hinders the positive atmosphere of the community.

Please note that these are just examples, and the list is not exhaustive.

If you come across content or behavior that you believe is an extreme violation of our guidelines, it's crucial to take action by reporting and alerting moderators. By acting swiftly in such cases, we work together to ensure the well-being and enjoyment of all NightCafe members.

For content that represents an extreme violation, report the creation directly on the creation page. This action places it in the moderation queue for thorough investigation.

Promoting a Positive Environment

Remember that your primary goal is to foster a positive, inclusive, and enjoyable environment for all users. Your measured and thoughtful actions contribute to the overall atmosphere of the community.

Communication with Chatters

While it’s not necessary to respond to every removed comment or creation, providing an explanation can be helpful for users to understand the reason behind the removal. Feel free to link to the Community Standards in your explanation for reference.

Grey Area Distinctions

  • Colorful language within context is acceptable, but excessive vulgar language aimed at offending is not.

  • Images of women and men with revealing clothing might be permissible, but content that is explicitly erotic or overly sexual should be removed.

  • Creations depicting some blood are generally allowed, but excessive gore or extreme blood content should be taken down.

Reaching Out to Moderators on the Site

If you encounter any uncertainty or require clarification, don't hesitate to reach out to a moderator or fellow host for assistance.

At this time, please use the Host Support Chat if there is suspicious activity in chats that you feel requires moderation involvement. If it's an immediate need and no Site Moderators are available to help, please escalate within the NC Lounge.

Taking Appropriate Action on Users

As a Chat Host, you have the authority to maintain a positive and respectful environment within chats. While you possess the ability to use Time Outs and Kick users, it's essential to approach these actions thoughtfully and progressively.

Gradual Steps for Addressing Disruptive Users:

  1. Gentle Reminder: When a user displays disruptive behavior, start with a gentle reminder of the community guidelines. Assume that they might not be fully aware of the rules.

  2. Stern Reminder: If the user persists in disruptive behavior, escalate to a more assertive reminder, making it clear that their actions are against the community guidelines.

  3. Time Outs: If the disruptive behavior continues despite reminders, employ Time Outs as the initial measure. Start with a 10-minute timeout to give the user an opportunity to reconsider their actions.

Progressive Time Outs:

  • 10-Minute Timeout: For a first offense, utilize a 10-minute timeout to allow the user to cool down and reflect.

  • 1-Hour Timeout: If the user returns after a 10-minute timeout and resumes disruptive behavior, consider implementing a 1-hour timeout to reinforce the importance of adherence to guidelines.

  • 24-Hour Timeout: In cases where disruptive behavior persists even after an hour-long timeout, resort to a 24-hour timeout to ensure a more extended period of reflection.

Kicking Users as a Last Resort

For cases of severe violations or if a user remains a significant disruption even after a 24-hour timeout, you have the option to use the "Kick" action. Kicking should be reserved as a last resort and primarily for extreme cases such as trolling or consistent, disruptive behavior.

Balancing Judgment and Action

Use your best judgment in deciding between timeouts and kicking. Generally, timeouts offer users a chance to reconsider their actions and may lead to a more positive outcome. Kicking should only be employed in rare cases where all other measures have been exhausted.

Note on alt accounts

While we appreciate your willingness to help keep the chats clean and toxic free, it's important to stress that you are not Moderators. Thus, you cannot take administrative action on Community Standards or Terms of Service breaches. You can, however, report it to a Moderator.

Handling Alt Account Suspicions

  • No Witch Hunts: Refrain from initiating "witch hunts" or engaging in confrontations based on suspicions of alt accounts.

  • Avoid Conclusions: Do not jump to conclusions about an account being an alt without concrete evidence.

Dealing with Claims of Alt Accounts

If an account claims to be an alt, do not immediately take action. Allow the user to interact within the chat without prejudice. If the account violates the Community Standards within the chat system, then escalate to moderators.

Community Engagement

As Chat Hosts, you have the opportunity to contribute to community engagement by initiating games and interactions within the chatrooms. Here are some guidelines to consider:

Host-Initiated Games

Feel free to start games in the chatrooms, either as per user requests or whenever you believe it will enhance the community experience.

Credit Distribution

  • Discourage Spammy Requests: Users begging for credits in a spammy manner is discouraged, as it detracts from the positive atmosphere.

  • Discretionary Tips: If you encounter users who could benefit from credits or if you decide to reward challenge winners, you have the option to use credits from your own bank at your discretion.

  • No Obligation: However, it's important to note that you are not obligated to tip or provide credits to users. It's ultimately up to your discretion.
